Okay, for starters, Gatekeepers is an anime created by Gonzo, I think it was around 1999 or 1998… Well anyway, the original story was made by Hiroshi Yamaguchi while the original characters designs are by Keiji Goto. It was actually an RPG game and of course, not to forget, it also became an animé manga before it was decided that it would also look good in a TV series! ^^; But we are not exactly sure when it was released in Japan, all we know is that it was released here at around January or March 2001 via AXN Asia.

Basically, Gatekeepers is all about busting out all alien invaders using the awesome gate powers possessed by certain, lucky individuals. (Cool huh?) So you as can see it has its share of this Sci-fi thing… ^^; It was set in the booming 1960's (so don't ever wonder why Kageyama-sama's wearing those outdated clothes, all right?), a time where Japan is currently enjoying an enormous economic development. AEGIS has spotted certain disturbances known as invaders -- What the hell is AEGIS anyway?!

AEGIS or Alien Exterminating Global Intercept System is an independent organization formed with the sole purpose of stopping aliens or popularly known as invaders from taking over our planet. It was actually organized together with the United Nations on May 1969. Before, it was called EDF or Earth Defense Force but changed to AEGIS when it became a top-secret organization working independently from the United Nations. There are actually a number of AEGIS branches worldwide but the main branch is located in New York, USA situated underground the United Nations Headquarters.

So with protecting the earth from the scums of the universe (a la Men In Black ^^;) comes the duty to look for individuals possessing unusual abilities, abilities that can open gates of different dimensions known as the gate power. Gate powers are limited and just handful possesses it. A gate power alone can stop a number of invaders. AEGIS' responsibility, aside from monitoring the planet's condition, is to provide the right weapons to enhance the power of the gates.

In the series, there are only eleven gates present together with their respective owners. Mind you that a gate's effect depends entirely on the positive/negative attitude of the owner:

Ukiya Shun: Gate of Whirlwind, has the ability to control the flow of atmosphere to be used for offensive attacks.

Ikusawa Ruriko: Gate of Life, has the ability to cure any kind of sickness.

Asagiri Reiko: Gate of Enchantment, uses destructive illusions for attack.

Konoe Kaoru: Gate of Close Combat, uses amazing physical strength.

Hojo Yukino: Gate of Ice and Snow, (gomen ne but I can't really understand this ability) In the series, Yukino always appears just to let Shun know the danger Ruriko's in ::scratches head:: I think she controls snow and basically almost anything that freezes. ^^;

Kurogane Megumi: Gate of Iron Wall, has the ability to generate indestructible shields.

Feiring Fei: Gate of Firing Heat, (my personal favorite! She's so kawaii!!!) has the ability to shoot fire.

Kageyama Reiji: Gate of Jet-Black: ::kneels:: (Hail thee Kageyama-sama ^^;) has the ability to use shadows for attacks. This is actually the negative gate power.

Jun Thunders: Gate of Lightning, has the ability to control lightning.

Jun Skylark: Gate of Supersonic Speed, has the ability to move using supersonic speed.

Sakimori Misao: Gate of Perception, has the ability to foresee things ten seconds ahead of time.
