A Day off with Death

Many people know of heaven and earth. Heaven being the place of eternal rest and the latter, the land of the living. What most people are unaware of is the world between heaven and earth.

The Reikai It is in this world where spirits that have passed on from the Ningenkai will be herded. Once there, it is decided where each spirit will proceed to:

Heaven or Hell.

Who alone would have the power to decide the fate of millions on millions of spirits?

The ruler of this world of course: Enma Daioh, the Lord of the Reikai... ...or maybe more precisely, his son.

"Why can't humans have longer life spans?" Koenma muttered to himself, as he continued his endless stamping of paperwork.

Yes, Reikai's Junior Lord, Koenma-sama. At the ripe age of 700 years, he has the sole power to decide the destinations of millions on millions on millions of Ningen spirits (as long as his decision is in collation with his father's opinion of course).

Few would be honored to have this responsibility...everyone else who is *sane* would rather jump off the edge of the Earth than have all that paperwork.

Nevertheless, someone's got to do it.

"Why me?" Koenma thought to himself. He let out a long sigh as he sifted through some documents.

Unexpectedly though, Fate had stumbled upon Koenma and took pity for this young god. It decided to compensate his long hours with something of a more enjoyable caliber.

"Koenma-sama, where do you want these files to go?" Botan said as she ran across the office floor.

However, due to the fact that the junior lord had already been ill affected by all this work, not to mention his thick headedness, he never came to realize Fate's gift when he first received it 100 years ago.

"Just put it over there, or anywhere! Can't you see I'm busy Botan?!" Koenma yelled, not missing a beat, as he continued to stamp through the papers.

Deciding that it had done enough for the prince of Reikai at the time, Fate moved on to other cases, not bothering to see if its gift would carry out.

By some glimmer of a chance, Fate had once again stumbled onto Koenma's case. Surprised beyond words with how little, as if any, progress had ensued, Fate decided to once more help bring what little happiness it could into the young god's life.

Yet Fate soon realized that this was easier said than done. What must one do to help a 700-year-old prince of the dead notice a very cheerful and cute, blue-haired ferry girl?

Naturally, it thought, one would have to get the 700-year-old prince of the dead......excessively drunk, as if there were no tomorrow. Then, Fate's logic continued, he would be so relaxed that he would most certainly notice the girl...

Thankfully though, Aphrodite happened to overhear Fate's plan and smacked Fate over the head. Fate decided it needed another approach.

Fortunately, Fate's help became unneeded, for the blue-haired ferry girl began to realize that she felt some affection towards her superior despite the treatment he usually gave her.

This was not entirely out of the blue. Aphrodite had been quite amused by this couple (and also couldn't stand for another suggestion by Fate) and had therefore, decided to use a few of her affection spells.

"Botan! Speed it up with those files!"

"H-hai, Koenma-sama!"

And thus begins the romantic path of a certain 700 year old junior lord of the Reikai and a garrulous blue-haired ferry girl.
